Simon J Harben SC was a founder of Newcastle Chambers in the late 1980s. In January 2013 he founded Hunter Street Chambers. He has previously been a member of various Bar Association Committees and in particular Common Law Committee as well as the Education Committee. Locally, he was at one stage the President of the Newcastle Bar Association.

Simon’s practice has always involved both criminal and civil work. He has done trial work in the criminal courts as well as at the appellant level. In addition to appearing for the accused, he has also acted as Crown Prosecutor from time to time and other prosecutorial capacities.

His civil work has involved significant cases for both plaintiff and defendant. This work has seen him engaged in cases against major insurers and commercial entities. Again, this work involved trial and appellant work.

He has appeared and advised in Royal Commissions, ICAC, Commissions of Inquiry, and various other Tribunals. His civil work also has seen him engaged in building and construction cases, as well as advising various institutional clients.

In addition to direct engagement in litigation, he conducts mediations as the Mediator and also has appeared on many occasions for a litigant in those mediations.
